The New River series has been inspired by a recent bicycle tour on the New River Trail in Virginia as well as many bicycle day trips I have explored with my husband along Railroad Grade Road. The South Fork of the New River begins in our town of Boone, North Carolina and is America's oldest river and perhaps, one of the top five oldest in the world. This astounds me; that I walk this ancient river's winding path each day. My color palette of fall tones to express the New River has emerged from my intentional 6 mile walking commute to my studio. I wanted to immerse myself in this season's glory and its ancient cycle of life and death; to express the energy of the transformation of the land; the climbing crimson vines, the poking purple thistles, the bursting seedpods, the spotted black and yellow leaves, the foraging fawns and the shallow river's caramel hue.
